About 30 minutes after sunset on September 4, 2024, the bright planet Venus – in evening twilight – can guide you to a slender two-day-old waxing moon. The ecliptic – or path of the sun, moon and planets, slants low to the horizon at this time of year as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. So from this hemisphere, Venus and the moon will be to the left of the sunset point. Binoculars can help you find the pair in the fading twilight. Some observers in parts of Antarctica and south Sandwich Island will see the moon occult Venus (pass in front of it) at 10 UTC on September 5.
