Obituary for Rick Frederick Russell Overpeck, Jr. at Madison Chapel (2024)


Mr. Frederick "Rick" Russell Overpeck, Jr., age 80 of Madison, Indiana, entered this life on November 6, 1943 in Madison, Indiana. He was the loving son of the late Frederick "Fred" Russell Overpeck, Sr. and Lucy Mildred Holt Overpeck. He was raised in Madison and graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1964 where he wrestled, ran track, and played football. He attended Ivy Tech and studied as an auto mechanic and welder. He was inducted into the United States Navy on June 1, 1968 in Madison, Indiana and rose to the rate of Aviation Boatsmate Third Class during the Vietnam War. He served in the Air Anti Submarine Squadron and was honorably discharged on May 27, 1968 at Bainbridge, Maryland receiving the National Defense Service Medal. He returned home to Madison and remained in the reserves until being discharged on May 31, 1970. On August 6, 1965, Rick was united in marriage to Dorothy Etta "Dot" Morris at the North Madison Christian Church by Bro. Ted Kiser. This happy union of 58 years was blessed with three sons, Frederick Russell, III, James Michael, and John David. He worked at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison for four years in maintenance and taught gas welding at Camp Atterbury. Rick also taught welding and auto mechanics at Ivy Tech for several years. Rick and Dot moved to Euless, Texas in 1985 and he worked for the FAA in Arlington for 15 years as a environmental technician. He then worked in Dallas for the FDA for 30 years. After they retired, they moved to Rio Grande Valley. In 2020, they settled back home in Madison, Indiana. While living in Euless, they attended Restoration Church and after coming home to Madison they attended Madison Assembly of God Church. He loved fishing, especially cat fishing, and playing cards. Rick and Dot believed in their hearts that it blessed them to bless others even if they were complete strangers. Rick loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rick died on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 10:40 p.m. at his home in Madison, Indiana.

A LOVING FAMILY
Rick will be missed by his loving his sons, Frederick Russell "Rusty" Overpeck, III and his wife, Cristina of Weatherford, Texas, James Michael "Jim" Overpeck and his wife, Tina of Madison, Indiana, John David Overpeck and his wife, Kimberly Ann of Sand Point, Idaho; his grandchildren, Aaron Overpeck, Brendan Overpeck, Lauren Mix, Kaidra Overpeck, Phillip Overpeck, Brayden Overpeck, Reaghan Overpeck, Emily Overpeck, Joel Lopez, Emmanuel Lopez, Terry Zacharie, and Sara Zacharie; his great grandchildren, Cayden Mix, Bennett Mix, and Aniston Overpeck; his brothers in law, Gene Ritchie of Lexington, Kentucky, Earl Morris and his wife, Marilyn of Bennington, Indiana; his sisters in law, Virginia Stephan and her husband, Alois of Canaan, Indiana, Lydia Ann Lainhart of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Gaylean Morris of Canaan, Indiana; his friend and neighbor, Judy Demaree of Madison, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Russell Overpeck, Sr., died June 6, 1981, his mother, Lucy Mildred Holt Overpeck, died June 4, 1991, his sisters, Marjorie Joanne Ritchie, died August 2, 2014, Linda Carole Simmons Tilley, died April 24, 2016, and Doris Paige Reed, died April 29, 2020, his beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy Etta "Dot" Morris Overpeck, died December 19, 2023.

FUNERAL CEREMONY
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana with a Celebration of Life luncheon to follow at the Madison Assembly of God Church, 1636 Clifty Drive in Madison, Indiana.

VISITATION
Friends may call Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.

MILITARY HONORS
A final salute with military honors to be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.
