What day is best for goodwill? ›

Mondays are often the best day to discover newly donated goods, including unique items or top brands to look for at thrift stores. Over the weekend, many people clean out their closets and drop off bags at their local Goodwill, meaning you can be the first to explore fresh finds before anyone else!

“Goodwill's rising prices can be attributed to several factors,” said Casey Jones, founder and head of marketing and finance at CJ&CO. “Firstly, the cost of operations — including rent, utilities and wages — has increased over time. Secondly, the quality and brand of donated items can also influence pricing.

All clothing is useful, even if it has holes. Clothes which can't be sold in the shop will be sold to textile recycling companies, so they still make money for the charity. The Charity Retail Association has advice on donating unusual items.

Where do most donated clothes go? ›

A minimum of about 30 percent of the total weight of donations received by Goodwill are sold locally through thrift stores, e-commerce and outlets, she estimates. Anything left over from outlets is sold in bulk as salvage where the materials are sorted into categories such as resale, recycling, downcycling and export.

According to Goodwill, the perfect time slot to shop at thrift stores is in the morning on both Monday and Tuesday. This is because, at least as far as Goodwill is concerned, people tend to donate garage sale remnants on Sunday, so the pickings are new and fresh come early weekdays.

Tip Two: Go at the Right Time

Another reason thrifting may seem difficult to you is because you aren't going at the right time. Goodwill replaces their items in the morning, and some stores replace their items just before closing as well. The safest choice is to go in the morning, right when the store opens.

Many families will still treat the Day of Goodwill as a day of rest and relaxation after the festivities of Christmas Day. For South Africans, 26 December is in the middle of the summer, so many families choose to head to the beach or their local parks and have a picnic or braai.
